Scouts of America has always been a uniformed body. Its uniforms help to create a sense of belonging. They symbolize character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Wearing a uniform gives youth and adult members a sense of identification and commitment.

  • Personal equality - The uniform represents a democratic idea of equality, bringing people of different backgrounds together in the Scouting tradition.
  • Identification - The uniform identifies youth and adult members of the Boy Scouts of America, visible as a force for good in the community. When properly and smartly worn, the uniform can build good unit spirit.
  • Achievement - The uniform shows the wearer's activity, responsibility, and achievement. The accomplishments of every youth and adult member can be recognized by the insignia worn on the uniform.
  • Personal commitment - The uniform is a constant reminder to all members of their commitment to the ideals and purpose of the Scouting movement. It is a way of making visible members' commitment to a belief in God, loyalty to country, and helping others at all times.

The leaders of Scouting—volunteer and professional—should promote the wearing of the correct, complete uniform on all suitable occasions.

See attached files for correct uniform and insignia placement.

Lion Scouts and their adult partners simply wear the Lion T-Shirt and cap.

Cub Scouts (Tigers, Wolves, Bears) wear the blue uniform.

Webelos and Arrow-of-Light can continue wearing the blue uniform OR they can start wearing the Boy Scout tan/green uniform. If you are joining as a Webelos/AoL, then it would be more sensible to start wearing the tan/green uniform so a new uniform isn't necessary when crossing over to Boy Scouts in the middle of 5th grade.

Pack 144 asks Scouts to wear the uniform shirt, belt, neckerchief and slide. If the Scout so desires, he may also wear the cap, pants, and socks. If you are not purchasing the actual uniform pants, please try to find pants that match closely (blue or olive green cargo pants depending on which uniform you're getting). The Cub Scout will also need the "Longhouse Council" patch, the unit numbers (there is an individual patch for each number: 1, 4, 4), and also the Worldwide Crest insignia.

New uniforms can be purchased at the Syracuse Scout Shop or online at Or please feel free to search for used uniforms on eBay, Craigslist, Facebook online or shop around your local Salvation Army and Goodwill stores. Also ask people you know who have boys who have outgrown their own uniform as well. As uniforms cost money, it's a good idea to buy one or two sizes larger so your boy can wear it for a few years.
